When you are dealing with a colorectal diagnosis, or symptoms that will not go away, you want a surgeon who has seen it before, knows exactly what to do, and will be straight with you. That is Dr Sulaiman.
Senior Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon, with over 20 years in surgery and a specialist in general surgery since obtaining his Joint Specialty Fellowship in 2013. He completed a Ministry of Health fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, is a Visiting Consultant at Changi General Hospital, and consults at five clinics across Singapore. He consults in English and Malay, so a patient looking for a Malay-speaking colorectal surgeon in Singapore can talk through a bowel problem directly, without a family member translating.
The surgeon
Trained in Sheffield, sharpened in Melbourne.
Dr Sulaiman Bin Yusof is a Senior Consultant colorectal and general surgeon with over 20 years of surgical experience. He has been a specialist in general surgery since obtaining his Joint Specialty Fellowship in 2013. He trained in the United Kingdom, graduating in medicine from the University of Sheffield, and completed his advanced surgical training at Changi General Hospital.
He was then awarded a Ministry of Health fellowship to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, where he specialised in complex colorectal cancer surgery. The Centre describes itself as Australia's only public hospital dedicated solely to cancer treatment, research and education, and as home to Australia's largest cancer research group.
Robotic technique is not an add-on for Dr Sulaiman. It is his primary platform for colectomy and anterior resection, chosen specifically for the precision it offers in the confined anatomy of the pelvis, and he has published on single docking technique for left sided colorectal procedures.
He has taught undergraduate medical students from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School. His teaching has been recognised with the Dean's Honour Roll for Teaching.
Known for his compassion and warmth, Dr Sulaiman has built enduring relationships with his patients. His consistent quality of care has been recognised with numerous Singapore Health Quality Service Awards, culminating in the prestigious Star Award in 2023.

How he operates
Smaller incisions. Greater precision.
Dr Sulaiman uses robotic-assisted technique as his primary surgical platform for colectomy and anterior resection. Robotic assistance allows meticulous dissection in the narrow pelvis, which matters most in rectal cancer surgery.
That is not only a description of how he works. He has published on the technique itself, including single docking for left sided colorectal procedures, and the paper is listed with the rest of his work below.

What he treats
The full spectrum of colorectal and general surgery.
Dr Sulaiman manages the full spectrum of colorectal and general surgical conditions, with particular expertise in the following.
Colorectal cancer
Including locally advanced and complex cases. What the disease is, how it is staged and what the surgery involves is set out on the colorectal cancer page.
Rectal cancer
Cases requiring sphincter preserving or robotic assisted resection, where the tumour sits low in the pelvis and the operation has to protect both cancer clearance and function.
Colon polyps and colonoscopic surveillance
A polyp found during a colonoscopy is usually removed in the same sitting, and what is found sets how soon the next scope should be.
Perianal conditions
Haemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistula and perianal abscess. These are the conditions most often mistaken for one another, and the one most often left too long.
Hernia
Inguinal, umbilical and hiatal hernia. Where the anatomy allows, repair is done by laparoscopic hernia repair rather than open surgery.
Gallbladder disease
Assessment and surgical management of gallstone disease, which is ordinary general surgical scope alongside his colorectal practice.
Inflammatory bowel disease
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, including the long term surveillance both conditions need because the risk of bowel cancer rises the longer the disease has been present.
Pages of his own cover colorectal cancer, colonoscopy, haemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistula and perianal abscess, alongside inguinal, umbilical and hiatal hernia, and laparoscopic hernia repair.

If you are considering a consultation
The difference is almost always how early you came in.
Colorectal symptoms are easy to dismiss and easy to delay acting on. Most turn out to be benign. Some do not. The difference between a good outcome and a difficult one is almost always how early you came in.
If something has been bothering you, blood in the stool, a change in bowel habits, or discomfort you cannot explain, that is worth a consultation rather than a wait. Bring your questions. Leave with a plan.
