What Are Colon Polyps and Should I Be Worried?
A senior colorectal surgeon in Singapore explains colon polyp types, symptoms, removal, recovery, and the follow-up that pathology determines.
Cost is one of the first questions patients raise when we discuss piles treatment, and I think that is entirely reasonable.
What I find is that the variation in cost is almost always a reflection of the variation in disease. Mild haemorrhoids, confirmed on examination, can often be managed with an in-clinic procedure. More advanced prolapse, or disease that has not settled with conservative treatment, requires surgery under general anaesthesia. The type of procedure, whether you need to stay in a hospital ward, the type of ward you choose, and what your insurance covers all follow from that clinical picture.
The figures below come from MOH published data and reflect actual transacted bills at private hospitals in Singapore. They give you a useful frame of reference. What they cannot tell you is which treatment your case calls for, and therefore what your costs are likely to be. That is something that will be clearer once we have a consultation.
Not every case of piles needs surgery. For Grade 1 and Grade 2 haemorrhoids, non-surgical options are usually recommended. Here’s how much they can cost.
A first consultation with a private specialist in Singapore typically ranges anywhere from $150 to $300, excluding medications and any procedures performed at the same visit. If a proctoscopy or sigmoidoscopy is performed during the consultation to confirm the diagnosis, this will add to the bill.
Topical treatments, including creams and suppositories to relieve itching and discomfort, are dispensed at standard outpatient rates. The cost varies depending on what is prescribed and it may be covered by Medisave if it is an approved treatment.
Rubber band ligation is an in-clinic procedure where a small elastic band is placed at the base of an internal haemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. It is performed without general anaesthesia and is typically done as part of a clinic visit.
At a private specialist clinic in Singapore, the cost for a rubber band ligation procedure generally ranges from $500 to $1,500 per session, depending on the number of haemorrhoids treated. Some patients require more than one session. MediSave may be applicable for in-clinic procedures such as rubber band ligation. Speak to your doctor to confirm your options before the appointment.
When haemorrhoids are Grade 3 or Grade 4, or when in-clinic treatment has not resolved the problem, surgery is the appropriate next step. Below, we’ve compiled the Ministry of Health (MOH) published data on day surgery and inpatient costs across private hospitals for piles surgery in Singapore. There are two main surgical operations for piles in Singapore, each with a TOSP code which you can use to determine the average cost for the procedure.
Conventional haemorrhoidectomy involves the surgical removal of the haemorrhoidal tissue. It is the most commonly practiced surgical technique for the removal of Grade 3 or Grade 4 hemorrhoids1. These are the median cost ranges for conventional piles removal across private hospitals in Singapore for day surgery and inpatient.
| Conventional Haemorrhoidectomy Costs in Singapore (TOSP SF836A) | |
| Day Surgery (Refers to operations done in the hospital, with a stay of less than 24 hours.) | $8,894 – $11,590 |
| Inpatient (Refers to operations done in the hospital, with a stay of more than 24 hours.) | $10,441 – $14,718 |
Stapled haemorrhoidopexy, also known as stapled haemorrhoidectomy, repositions rather than removes the haemorrhoidal tissue, reducing prolapse and interrupting the blood supply. Clinical trials have found that this procedure is generally quicker than conventional haemorrhoidectomy, with less postoperative pain and a faster return to normal activity2.
| Stapled Haemorrhoidopexy Costs in Singapore (TOSP SF837A) | |
| Day Surgery (Refers to operations done in the hospital, with a stay of less than 24 hours.) | $10,134 – $11,556 |
| Inpatient (Refers to operations done in the hospital, with a stay of more than 24 hours.) | $11,310 – $13,562 |

If you are trying to work out what piles treatment is likely to cost in your situation, the most useful conversation you can have is at the consultation itself, where your grade can be confirmed and your insurance options reviewed thoroughly.
I am a Senior Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon in Singapore, practising at Gleneagles, Mount Elizabeth Novena, Parkway East, Mount Alvernia, and Farrer Park. At the consultation, I confirm the grade of the haemorrhoids, explain which treatment options are appropriate for your case, and walk you through what is MediSave-claimable and what your Integrated Shield Plan is likely to cover.
