The Surgeon

Dr. Sulaiman Bin Yusof is a Senior Consultant colorectal and general surgeon with over 15 years of specialist experience. He trained in the United Kingdom, completed his advanced surgical training at Changi General Hospital, and was awarded a Ministry of Health fellowship to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne — one of the Asia-Pacific’s foremost cancer institutions — where he specialised in complex colorectal cancer surgery.

He is one of a handful of surgeons in Singapore listed on the da Vinci Xi surgeon locator, reflecting demonstrated proficiency in robotic colorectal surgery. Robotic technique is not an add-on for Dr. Sulaiman — it is his primary platform for colectomy and anterior resection, chosen specifically because of the precision it offers in the confined anatomy of the pelvis.

He has held Adjunct Associate Professor appointments at NUS Yong Loo Lin, Lee Kong Chian, and Duke-NUS medical schools — a distinction that reflects both his clinical standing and his commitment to shaping the next generation of surgeons. He has been recognised on the Dean’s Honor Roll for Teaching across these institutions.

In 2023, he received the Singapore Health Quality Service Star Award — the highest tier of patient-centred recognition in Singapore’s healthcare system, voted by patients themselves.

What He Treats

Dr. Sulaiman manages the full spectrum of colorectal and general surgical conditions, with particular expertise in:

  • Colorectal cancer — including locally advanced and complex cases
  • Rectal cancer requiring sphincter-preserving or robotic-assisted resection
  • Colon polyps and colonoscopic surveillance
  • Haemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal fissures, and perianal conditions
  • Hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, hiatal)
  • Gallbladder disease and laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)

Why Patients Choose Him

He does not rush consultations. He explains what is happening in your body, what the options are, and what he would recommend — and why. Patients facing cancer diagnoses describe leaving his consultation feeling informed and in control, rather than overwhelmed.

His practice spans five locations across Singapore, with Medisave and major integrated shield plans accepted.

Credentials

Dr. Sulaiman graduated from the University of Sheffield and completed his specialist training at Changi General Hospital, where he later served as Director of Endoscopy — overseeing one of Singapore’s busiest endoscopy units. He holds the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in General Surgery and remains a Visiting Consultant at Changi General Hospital.

He is a Member of the Singapore Colorectal Society and has published eight peer-reviewed journal articles spanning robotic colorectal surgery, complex cancer management, endoscopy, and surgical education.

If You Are Considering a Consultation

Colorectal symptoms are easy to dismiss and easy to delay acting on. Most turn out to be benign. Some do not. The difference between a good outcome and a difficult one is almost always how early you came in.

If something has been bothering you — blood in the stool, a change in bowel habits, discomfort you cannot explain — book a consultation. You will leave with answers.

Dr. Sulaiman’s dedication extends beyond surgery. As the Director of Endoscopy, he has held numerous administrative and educational roles. He is passionate about teaching, contributing significantly to undergraduate education at Yong Yoo Lin, Lee Kong Chian, and Duke’s medical programs. His efforts earned him the title of Adjunct Associate Professor and numerous awards, including the Dean’s Honor Roll for teaching. He has also published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles.

Known for his compassion and warmth, Dr. Sulaiman has built enduring relationships with his patients. His consistent quality of care has been recognized with numerous Singapore Health Quality Service Awards, culminating in the prestigious Star Award in 2023.
